Album Review
Place Of Skulls – “As A Dog Returns”
As A Dog Returns is the latest release from the doom metal band, Place Of Skulls. From the very first note the whole record has a sort of 70’s classic rock feel mixed in with a wall of doom and gloom. At times, this disc is quite heavy and distorted, but it still has an experimental or indie quality feel about it as well. Many of the songs also include extended jam sessions and slower parts which are nicely accented by acoustic guitars and at times even harmonica.

As far a subject matter, Place Of Skulls tackle themes that are religious and/or Biblical in nature; even their name is a reference to Golgotha. I for one think it’s good to see a number of bands breaking away from the usual gore, horror, misogynist and anti-religious themes that run so rampant through the metal scene. Please make note though; this is not a preachy album by any means at all, it’s solid, gloomy doom metal. If this genre is your thing this disc will appeal to you without a doubt.
As far as production goes, the album is graced with an incredible organic and warm sound and is very listenable. This release appeals to me on a number of levels, but the main reason I dig it is because it’s unlike most of what’s going on in metal at the moment. It is definitely a bit outside the box and I dig that! There are a few bands doing the classic rock/doom metal thing and I feel that Place Of Skulls can easily hold their own amongst any of them. If you want to hear something a bit different check out As A Dog Returns, it’s pretty darn gnarly! [ END ]
