Album Review
Criminal Element – “Crime and Punishment Pt. 1” [EP]
I’d like to state right here that I do not own any Dying Fetus or Misery Index albums. Reputation seems to precede both groups and so what follows now is my impression of Criminal Element’s mail-order EP.

Members of other bands sometimes write music with other members, from well… other bands. And sometimes, the result is fantastic [Them Crooked Vultures anyone?] other times well it is pretty much mediocre. Naturally then, fans of either Dying Fetus or Misery Index may have a tough time digesting Criminal Element’s EP titled Crime and Punishment Pt. 1 since basically Criminal Element is derived from current and ex members of both bands, a blending in influences, tones and styles is preferred, yet the EP remains sounding more like Misery Index than anything.
Upon first listen of this little EP I was floored at the viscous and brutal assault that was unleashed onto my ears. The second time through, sadly I heard far more generic blast beats and breakdowns and less creativity than anything. The exception is the fourth track “Fading Survival” which breaks from the rest of the heavy to offer a borderline groove in the midst of the aural asault. This EP’s title “Crime and Punishment Pt. 1” makes me think there is to be a Pt. 2 issued soon which can hopefully offer more substance for my ears.
Still, fans of either Dying Fetus or Misery Index are fans for particular reasons and can definitely still enjoy listening to this EP. Offering only 5 tracks by the end of the listen you will not be sure to feel violated or totally freaking pumped up. This EP is definitely not an introduction to death / heavy metal material however, seasoned listeners and fans will appreciate owning this absolutely intense offering of an EP. [ END ]
