The song “Cryophobia” delivered to us by way of European death metal act Preternatural is a violently, vicious sounding tune. While all of the typical and essential elements of a good solid death metal tune are present and accounted for, it is the band’s unique blending of extreme metal with very interesting keyboard lines that both distinguishes and separates this song and band from many of the other run of the mill acts that seem to be flooding the scene. Be forewarned though, once “Cryophobia” gets underway, it’s an all out, full on display of metallic mayhem and diabolic delight.
Preternatural was formed in 1999 in Riga, Lativa has since shared the stage with major acts such as Cradle Of Filth, Cannibal Corpse, Vader, Nile, Soilwork and Atrocity. According to the band’s website this song in particular: “…is kind of an abstract warning based on a theory of ‘a living planet,’ that considers humanity as the parasite and has no will to sustain the symbiosis, putting an end to all mankind using cold as a weapon.’ A deep meaning to an equally musically-deep tune.
“Cryophobia” is unremittingly punishing, furiously fast and unquestionably a song for those who like a bit more muscle in their musical diet. Obvious intensity aside however, it is the keyboards that add a melodic element to the tune which make it more than just a hammer to the face. Admittedly, I am not usually the biggest fan of this genre of music, but track has many layers and dimensions to it that make it quite enjoyable. It represents the genre well as a whole and I feel is an extreme metal heads dream come true. [ END ]
