Hydra Lernaia (06.23.2009)
Hydra Lernaia begins with a thundering assault featuring pounding drums, screaming, gnashing vocals and heavy, extremely distorted guitars. This disc is a full on auditory battering from the very first note and it does not let until the very last note. Each song on this disc doles out an uncompromising force that is full of hostility and aggression. Overall, I feel the production is incredibly overdriven and mostly distorted; at times found it difficult to listen to.
On a positive note there are a couple of songs on Hydra Lernaia that I feel are decent and listenable and have some merit. “Opposites From Within” is a decent tune with a good groove that I found myself sort of digging. “Echoes Of Distress” is another tune worth mentioning mainly because the inclusion of some melodic undertones makes it a little more palatable than the rest of the disc.
“Lam Tsol Oua” is an instrumental of sorts or perhaps maybe an interlude. Whatever the case, situated in the middle of the disc this atmospheric, slightly eerie track provided me with a necessary break from the incessant pounding I had endure up to this point.
Honestly, I had a hard time with this disc. It is way too intense for my liking and I just could not figure out what to make of it. I feel that if you are a fan of other extreme metal acts than this disc might be for you. Otherwise, you might find yourself in the same boat as me, just sort of wondering what the point is. [ END ]
