The Rekoning

The Road Less Traveled (01.06.2009)

As a freelance writer, I receive tons of discs on a weekly basis most of which do not leave much of an impact longer than the time it takes to listen to and write the review. Not the case with The Rekoning, a 3 piece punk band from Riverside California. The Rekoning are set to release their debut CD, The Road Less Traveled, on Strike First Records on January 6th, 2009. Let me tell you, this is a damn good disc, start to finish.

The record starts out with an intro that is reminiscent of an Irish Pub sing-along, complete with an accordion, you heard right, a punk band that has successfully incorporated an accordion into the mix; I was sold right from the get go. As the disc progresses it just seems to get better and better. Everything you would expect from a punk band including lots of catchy gang vocals and choruses that will make you want to pump your fist in the air in reckless abandon. With influences ranging from the Ramones to the Misfits and with a bit of traditional Irish music thrown in for good measure; a strange juxtaposition of instruments and genres that works incredibly well.

If someone came to me and said they had .99 cents and wanted to know what song off of The Road Less Traveled to purchase, I would have a hard time picking one favorite. This is really a complete album and not a collection of a few singles for the radio that will die out in a week but If pressed to make a choice I would probably choose “Necessary Violence” and “Paved With Gold.”

This is a must have disc and when January 6th rolls around I suggest you run and not walk to pick this up, it is that good.  [ END ]
