Cinco Diablo is the newest release from Island recording artists Saliva and is everything you would expect from the guys and then some. Metal with a healthy dose of southern rock thrown into the mix, Cinco Diablo grabs you by the balls and refuses to let up. Heavy, melodic and aggressive, while still incorporating detailed guitar work and monster, anthemic, sing-along choruses, this CD definitely rocks. Every track is hook-laden and it is easy to imagine every one of these tunes translating well into a live setting, with scores of fans singing along in unison.

“Hunt You Down,” might be my favorite track on the disc and it starts things off with a great riff that quickly morphs into a gripping metal groove guaranteed to get you up out of your seat and moving to the beat. Other songs worth notable mention are “My Own Worst Enemy” and “Family Reunion.”

However, by far the song with the greatest impact on the disc is “Judgment Day.” Controversial in nature, it is sure to stir the emotions of most every listener. The song is sung from the viewpoint of a soldier fighting in the Iraqi War and trying to stay alive. “Focus in and stay relaxed/Before I have a damn heart attack/Stay alive and stay intact/God knows I want to make it back/This cant be the end for me/I’ve Got a lot of stuff to do you see/Raise my kids and my family/I pray that God is protecting me.” Stirring lyrics that strike a chord and reverberate long after the song is done.

While the band has not changed their formula all that much from their previous releases their growth as songwriters and musicians is readily apparent and Cinco Diablo should be a necessary disc for the scores of Saliva fans out there. Bottom line this is a very good record from a very good band.  [ END ]
