Annotations Of An Autopsy
Before The Throne Of Infection (04.15.2008)
As I’m sure almost every one of you readers already knows, Deathcore has become far too popular, far too quickly. While the genre is great, it loses it’s touch when there are too many damn cookie cutter bands jumping on the rise in popularity of any one genre. Unfortunately, Annotations Of An Autopsy are one of those bands that make you potentially want to drop the genre altogether.
While I do quite enjoy this style of music, I believe AOAA took it a bit too far in terms of the vocals and the lyrical content. It’s great for the vocalist to toss in a pig-squeal from time to time, or utter a fairly dark and low growl, but when these two things are used in succession too many times, it does get repetitive and slightly boring to say the least.
In terms of lyrical content, lines such as “The ghastly sight of blood and entrails leaves my mark across the land” suggest the band may be trying a bit too hard to “gross out” their fan base. I’m all for symbolism when it comes to gore, but when it comes to lines like this it just seems to flat out suggest that the vocalist thinks he is top-shit.
Slagging aside, not all tracks are as above. “Sludge City” is quite a different piece of work. While there isn’t a whole lot to offer, it does have a nice groove, with a more toned down feel. Several lines are repeated multiple times, which is a bit of a bummer, but it isn’t uncommon for tracks to replay specific lines or sequences.
Positive note aside, I do stand by my previous statement that there are far too many bands of this nature. Whether or not many of you agree i can’t say, but one thing is for certain, while this album may have its moments, I believe it may just collect dust on my CD rack. [ END ]
