Oh that Jenny Lewis: she’s the girl next door you want to get drunk with so she lowers her standards and gives you a shot. Even in her 30s, the girl has got it. Now Gwen Stefani of the indie-rock world, Lewis returns to her boys after a very successful solo stint. Don’t expect another folky good time though; things have changed.
As soon as the first few bars of “Silver Lining” are sung it is evident how strong Lewis’ voice has become. Hearing it is like listening to an angel, and is enough to impress fans new and old. A variety of genres are touched upon – and just in case you ever wondered what the cast of Three’s Company listened to at their apartment, I bet it sounds a lot like “Dejalo,” or “The Moneymaker,”; both of which are destined to become roller-disco anthems. I was worried Blake Sennett wouldn’t get to sing a song on the album, but I’m happy to say he gets one and even embraces the new experiment of sounds.
This album sounds nothing like the ex-Saddle Creekers past three albums; however, I want to stress that even though the shift to a major label has changed the band’s sound, it hasn’t changed their heart. They can still make you dance, think, cry, and of course, smile. Maybe my school-boy crush is making me biased, but I still say Rilo Kiley can do no wrong. [ END ]
