Fans of alternative rock in Toronto were fortunate enough to have the up and coming English band Band of Skulls roll through town recently for a packed show. The group released their sophomore album Sweet Sour earlier this year which has scored them a major hit with the album’s title track. As a special contributor to PureGrainAudio, our friend Julie was fortunate enough to speak with Band of Skulls bassist and singer Emma Richardson on the day of the Toronto show. The girls discussed various music related issues, including song writing, making the band’s very memorable videos, Emma’s beautiful artwork, life on the road and even a little bit about poutine. Emma was as personable of a musician as you will ever meet, as well as beautiful and amazingly talented.

On Friday, March 31st, 2012, the day after having performed their song “Sweet Sour” on the David Letterman show, British alternative rock sensations Band of Skulls, graced the Phoenix concert theatere in Toronto, Canada. To our absolute surprise we met with the band in their dressing room prior to the show and were privy to a wonderful, private acoustic session. We actually scored this because another news media source cancelled. The band could have declined, but graciously offered and the end result is this outstanding, intimate acoustic performance of “The Devil Takes Care of His Own”. Special thanks to the crew who were awesome in arranging everything, even making sure the surrounding rooms were quiet for this recording.

On their sophomore full-length release the UK alt/indie act Band Of Skulls has virtually perfected their brand of infectiously catchy, melodic rock. Musically they have the feel of an indie band playing sludge rock, but layered over the fuzzy yet insanely groovy rhythm tracks are some of the smoothest, sweetest-sounding harmony vocal lines I’ve heard in a long time. The songs themselves run the gamut from the slower paced, (yet still overdriven) tune, “Lay My Head Down” to the super-catchy, mid-tempo, riff driven opener, “Sweet Sour.”
