Electronic Rock Icon GARY NUMAN’s (R)Evolution Shows No Signs of Slowing Down in Leeds [Photos & Show Review]
Fans new and old packed into the Leeds O2 Academy on Saturday night as electronic rock icon Gary Numan came to town. Check out our photo gallery from the show here.
Electronic rock icon Gary Numan has been doing this for forty years now. Yes, just take that in, forty years and, as has been the same across the UK on this celebration run, the man is showing he is still at the top of the game and the electronic rock league. It’s Saturday night in Leeds when we catch this run of date packing ourselves into the O2 Academy in Leeds with a thousand or so hardcore fans for a career-spanning set.
As is the case with this genre of music, Numan puts on a flawless display but does it without the whole thing feeling overly cold and clinical. His band are on point backing up the frontman who lurches about the stage under a retina-sizzling light show. Pulling a set together from forty years of material is always going to be a tough call and, let’s face it, we could have been there all night if Numan was to keep every fan happy. Still, aside from “Cars” and “Are Friends Electric,” the obvious staples in any Numan set, the artist managed to deliver the kind of set that kept fans of all chapters in his career satisfied mixing material from his latest album Savage and smashing it together with a musical buffet from Numan including the likes of “Metal,” “I Die, You Die” and many more.
All played out in a bleak, futuristic setting, Numan may be forty years into his career but the machine shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. So, all that remains is to raise a toast to this rock icon and join him in his (r)evolution.
On the evidence of tracks like “My Name Is Ruin,” Gary Numan has plenty of life left in him:
