Volbeat @ University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK) on November 20, 2014 [Show Review]
Volbeat end their touring cycle for Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies with a fine mix of new and old favourite in Norwich. Hopefully the UK won’t have to wait too long for them to return to these shores.
Despite being massive over on mainland Europe for a while it’s only been in the last couple of years that Volbeat have made the same sort strides on these shores, and judging by this nearly sold out tour, they are now as popular in the UK as anywhere.
Tonight in Norwich, it is the last night of the tour and the last show before they start work on a new album, and it’s clear they want to go out with a bang. First up though are Hatebreed, and as always, they deliver a pummelling set that sends the crowd into the usual frenzy.
As good as Hatebreed are though, tonight is really about Volbeat and they launch into the evening’s festivities with “Hallelujah Goat”. While they do the expected and play mostly songs from their the most recent album, they still find room to fit in the classics from their back catalogue including “Sad Man’s Tongue” and the Mikkel Kessler tribute “A Warrior’s Call”. Closing with “Still Counting” they send the crowd home happy and wanting more at the same time.
Volbeat put on a show tonight and with an excitable and responsive crowd, it is easy to see that the enjoyment was flowing both ways, a great way to end the Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies touring cycle.
