Last Call Chernobyl recently released their debut D5R album, Drowning Beneath the Sound Of Change. I also recently asked LCC’s bassist Jason Szeto about his Jim Dunlop MXR D.I.+. Read on to find out about this great piece of equipment and how it affects LCC’s signature sound.
What one piece of equipment do you use to obtain your signature sound?
Jason: I don’t think I can narrow it down to one piece of equipment that gives me my tone. Ibanez 5-string basses and Gallien-Krueger RB heads are definitely integral. However I’d have to say my favourite piece of gear to my tone shaping is my Jim Dunlop MXR D.I.+.
What about it makes it so important to you?
Jason: It’s just a great pedal that makes your sound richer and gives you extra control over EQ. Also it’s got some great distortion on it and a noise gate. I’ll play through any rig/bass with this pedal and know that it’ll sound somewhat decent.
What are the major pros and cons?
Jason: Pros: Great way to “thicken up” your tone, extra control for EQ and adding distortion, built like a tank, has 2 channels i.e. clean and driven, noise gate and it’s just a solid clean D.I. Box.
Cons: Driven channel scoops out some mid range frequency.
How long have you used this piece of equipment and would you ever change it?
Jason: I’ve used this pedal for 2 years now. I’m also open to trying new pedals, but so far this is doing a great job.
Any final thoughts or comments on the gear?
Jason: For any bassists looking for something sonically different from Sansamp drivers or wanting to bulk up their tone I’d recommend this.
