Miranda Joan – “I’m Good” [Song Review]
Slow and elegantly swanky, “I’m Good” dangles the beguiling voice of Miranda Joan like a rare gem, inimitable and captivating.
Originally from Montreal and now based in Brooklyn, NY, Miranda Joan grew up on the north shore of Vancouver, recording her emotions and experiences in a diary. Her new song/lyric video, “I’m Good,” is a reminder to cherish the small things in life.
Joan explains, “I wrote this song on the heels of a year that kicked my ass. It was a time when my mind, body, and spirit had suffered, long and slow, and I was looking for a place of peace where I could rest. Standing in the midst of the wreckage of that year, all I could see at the time was the damage, and so I wrote this song to remind myself of what still was; of the love that remained. It looked different now, but there was still so much there.”
In Canada, Joan began performing in high school drama and musical theatre. She developed a preference for soul, R&B, and jazz, which favoured her voice. Later, she moved to New York to study jazz, where she is the co-host and co-founder of Brooklyn’s Femme Jam, NYC’s first all-female jam session, as well as a music mentor with SAY, The Stuttering Association for the Young, where she works with young people who stutter.
She has performed on national tours, played sold-out and headline shows at well-known New York venues, provided backing vocals for the likes of Shawn Mendes, Lorde, and Andy Grammar, and joined Sly5thAve at Montréal Jazz Festival with the Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal, in a tribute to Dr. Dre.
In 2019, Joan released her EP, Still, followed by her debut album, Windborne, both of which received airplay in Vancouver and L.A., along with sync placement on Canadian TV’s The Strays. In 2022, she dropped two singles, “Overstimulated” and “I Love You, Dwayne.”
At the present juncture, Joan is collaborating with Ben Carr, aka CARRTOONS, on her sophomore album, Overstimulated, which she describes as “an album book-ended by songs of affirmation, of rooting, of returning to and loving oneself, intertwined with the messy, chaotic and interconnected web of my hopes, dreams, imagination, love, and heartache.”
“I’m Good” rolls out on a soft, evocative piano riding a thumping kick drum. As low-slung, cashmere leitmotifs enter, the melody takes on depth and resonance as Joan’s delicate, sighing voice imbues the tune with spectral, soulful timbres. It’s one of those distinctive voices, at once unique and alluringly sumptuous.
Slow and elegantly swanky, “I’m Good” dangles the beguiling voice of Miranda Joan like a rare gem, inimitable and captivating.
