Brooklyn indie-rockers Sunflower Bean stopped in Chicago this past Friday night at The Bottom Lounge with opener Jackie Hayes.
A Chicago-area native, singer/songwriter Jackie Hayes has established herself in the grunge/pop scene and will soon release her third EP. Jackie’s set was short but was a good mix of tracks from her 2020 debut EP take it, leave it including “dead of winter” and “headache” as well as “omg” and “material” from her second EP There’s Always Going To Be Something. Fans were treated to three unreleased tracks from her upcoming release: “August,” “Best of It,” and “Focus.”
Indie-rock trio Sunflower Bean took the stage to loud applause, as they started their 14-song set with “Headful of Sugar” and “In Flight,” both tracks off their newest album Headful of Sugar, released earlier this month. Lead vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming led us into the band’s 2018 track “Twentytwo” before moving into three more tracks off the new album: the reflective “Otherside,” moody “Roll The Dice,” and punk track “Baby Don’t Cry.”
Co-vocalist Nick Kivlen and drummer Olive Faber added to Cumming’s rhythmic energy, and together the trio created a self-described “gleeful anarchy” with early 2016 song “Easier Said” as well as Headful of Sugar’s bonus track “Moment In The Sun.” Sunflower Bean continued their set with the percussion-led “I Don’t Have Control Sometimes” and the gloomy love song “I Was A Fool” before finishing their set with four more tracks from Headful of Sugar: The disco-pop “Post Love,” the album’s opening track “Who Put You Up To This,” early ’00s inspired “Beat The Odds,” and the band’s earliest release “Someone Call A Doctor.”
