Fresh from a sold-out UK arena tour (read our review of the Leeds show), British pop sensations Take That took their This Life tour out to stadiums across the UK with V13 catching the stadium run on the opening night at the Riverside Stadium, home of Middlesbrough FC.

Continuing to join the Mancunian headliners was Essex pop favourite Olly Murs, who is now a few weeks into fatherhood and, as always, has this crowd up and dancing with a mix of covers and his own huge pop hits. Over the years, Take That has had many different crowd-pleasing support acts joining them on tours like this and, as alluded to in my review of the Leeds show, the choice of the cheeky Essex lad couldn’t be a better fit.

As for the pop machine that is Take That, their humungous production rolls into Middlesbrough for the opening run of dates across various football stadiums and, judging by the packed arena, this juggernaut of British pop shows no sign of slowing down.

Promoting their This Life album, the group’s set list is stacked out with the perfect mix of new songs like “Windows” and, for this hardcore Take That fanbase, an absolutely mouthwatering array of iconic British pop hits. From “Shine” to “Patience” to “Greatest Day” and “Relight My Fire,” the set list reads like an A-Z of their greatest hits while the show, switching to a static walkway for the outdoor shows, has everything the arena show had but bigger.

For this huge, hardcore Take That audience, their love affair with Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen shows no signs of diminishing and even as the group is still wrapping up with “Never Forget” and “Back For Good,” many of those fans are already looking ahead to the next dates on the tour.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
