Los Angeles bass-and-drums duo Paradise Vultures deliver a sound that can best be described as dirty, doomy, desert disco. Recently, the pair, comprised of bassist and vocalist Tommy Senter and drummer Matty Barreca, announced their single “Sister Kennedy,” due out May 24, 2024.
Tommy Senter comments on the song, stating:
“‘Sister Kennedy’ is primarily about the desperation of addiction and the gnawing frustration of feeling trapped in a cycle of fighting problems with bigger problems. Whatever the agent of self-medication may be, it ultimately only serves to distort reality further, marching inexorably toward a bleaker and bleaker future.”
He expands:
“This song was written at a point in my life when I was desperate to change my whole life, but was so turned around I could barely tell which way was up. It got to a point where a lobotomy seemed like a halfway decent answer: to be able to turn my brain on mute in this incredibly archaic, brutal fashion. The tragic story of Rosemary Kennedy (sister to JFK and RFK) being forcibly lobotomized at the direction of her father came to mind, and the song got its title.
“The rhythmic, musical, and lyrical dynamics of the song serve to represent the peaks and valleys of addiction, with the carnival funhouse-inspired bridge gleefully tumbling down the rabbit hole of resigning to the madness.”
Known for their engaging, dynamic live shows, the duo is equal parts candid and cynically humorous onstage, with a focus on infectious melodies, deeply personal lyrics, and effortlessly danceable grooves. They have released four singles from their upcoming full-length debut, Born to Lose, due out later this year.
The album was produced and mixed by Phil English (Biffy Clyro; St. Paul and the Broken Bones; Tank and the Bangas) at Eldorado Studios (Alice in Chains, Dirt; The Offspring, Americana; My Chemical Romance, The Black Parade) and will be coming out late-2024.
