France-based pianist, composer, producer, sound designer, creator, and director of the Whales Records label, Julien Marchal, unveils his latest single/music video, “Insight LIII,” a compelling addition to his “Insight” cycle.

In his teens, Marchal found sanctuary in the piano, which provided him with emotional egress. He left school to work as a temp and purchased a synthesizer. His training in musicology at Bordeaux University and his time at the Bordeaux Conservatory enriched his musical approach, blending classical, jazz, and contemporary music.

In 2014, a burglary prompted him to compose his first EP, marking the start of his recording career. In 2015, he released his album, INSIGHT, followed by INSIGHT II in 2016. Marchal has collaborated with Robot Koch, Steve Aoki, Recue, and Ed Tullett, with whom he formed Lissom.

Marchal’s music has been featured in How to Get Away With Murder, Ray Donovan, and HBO’s True Detective.

A light, rippling piano opens “Insight LIII,” and then adds darker accents that allow breathing space and slowly become sparser, followed by returning to density. As the leitmotifs ebb and rise, the melody immerses listeners in a dreaming inversion of existence, gentle and floating. The tune slowly dissipates, pauses, and shifts to stark shadowy tones.

“Insight LIII” conveys its own conviction, producing an exquisitely subtle sonic conversation drenched in gliding turns of phrase.
