Fake Youth Cult Release Debut Full-Length ‘White Light/Black Noise’
Shipwrec Records has delved into the underbelly of electronics for their latest discovery, White Light/Black Noise. Fake Youth Cult is the brand-new project of Richard van Kruysdijk, an artist integral to the Dutch music scene.
“The concept behind the songs is: create one song a day with a minimal, mainly analogue setup. Just a few synths, some drum samples, a sequencer and GO!”
This is how van Kruysdijk describes the work process on his latest creation. Starting with one track, Fake Youth Cult organically grew into a fully formed project. He also states:
“The final track, ‘Pulsar’ was commissioned for a modern ballet piece.”
van Kruysdijk is a professional composer and frequent collaborator of many modern dance groups. A wide-range piece written for the ballet performance included electronic instruments co-existing with string quartet parts and a live drum performance. That’s where it came on the radar of Shipwrec Records.
“This release started with Ferdi, the founder of Shipwrec, contacting me a few months after he went to see a modern ballet performance which featured the original music which became ‘Pulsar.’ Ferdi asked if it was released somewhere already and I told him it was not. My commissioned works are rarely released as ‘stand-alone’ music as they are always 100 percent tailored for the specific dance performance.”
Keeping it simple, intuitive, the composer suddenly discovered the outlet for numerous ideas of his that have been floating around. Organically occupying the time and the mind of Richard van Kruysdijk. Following the release of the digital only, Discipline EP, Fake Youth Cult gets ready to occupy the masses.
Across six tracks on White Light / Black Noise, a realm of shadows and steel is constructed. From the murky tones of “Visitor” to the industrial and blackened “Scorched,” a towering sound of punishing percussion looms over the listener. Techno is the central message. Despite this, the piercing coldness of electro rises in the incising and stark “Messing.” The influence of punk comes to the fore in racing rhythms and lean strings that make up “Smear.” BPMs drop in the slow burning EBM stained “Management.” The machines take control for the finale. A relentless kick is the motor that drives this seven-minute juggernaut to the close. Broad and brutish brilliance from a prodigious talent.
