Moist – “Tarantino (Bullet Kill Sex Love Thrill)” [Free Song Download]
With their first new release since 2014’s Glory Under Dangerous Skies, Canadian alt-rock royals, Moist are back with the powerful new single, “Tarantino.” Dropped on January 29, 2021, the stirring track is a nice addition to the band’s deep catalogue. Since 1993, these dudes have reigned over that small-but-special niche of Canadian rock, with David Usher’s vocal work underpinning and elevating everything they do. And “Tarantino,” now available as a free song download, continues that tradition.
Supplemented with a slightly-creepy-but-you-can’t-look-away music video ostensibly critiquing our modern obsession with cosmetic surgery, “Tarantino” bristles its way through uneventful verses to deliver its glorious, anthemic chorus. Usher takes over and reminds us all why Moist has been relevant for so long: the dude can sing. You might listen to the tune once, feel slightly squeamish watching the visual accompaniment, and think that’s the end of it. But that chorus will come for you in your sleep.
On the song, David Usher explains its origins and Tarantino titling: “The first lockdown sent me on a Quentin Tarantino binge and the song came out of a dream sparked by those images where we have lost all sense of ourselves – where there are no limits on our consumption and all we want is more. We deconstruct and reconstruct ourselves to fill an unfillable void and we just eat ourselves alive, and somehow, we still can’t wake up.”
