Cirque Du Soleil Brings Their ‘Crystal’ Ice Extravaganza to Sheffield [Photos & Show Review]
Cirque Du Soleil is the 42nd Cirque production and, as it arrived in the UK, the ice extraveganza showed that it is one of their best yet.
No matter how many times you come to see Cirque Du Soleil, you will always leave astounded at how they manage to put the show together. Their latest touring show, the ice extravaganza Cyrstal, is no different as we found out when the tour arrived in the UK for it’s opening night at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield.
During a backstage tour of the show ahead of the opening, an opportunity for media to see how the whole thing comes together, you not only see the vastness of putting on a production like this but also some of the finer details that make these shows such a spectacle. From the rows of trucks lined-up outside the venue, to the production line of industrial washing machines to the stagehands stitching together costumes and wigs, it’s an eye-opening experience every time. Elsewhere an insight into the technical aspect of the show reveals the tricks that the Cirque team has up their sleeves to keep this show as visually stunning as possible.
Crystal announces its arrival in the UK with a snowball fight between one of the stars of the show and members of the audience. It’s an entertaining start to the night which, at just shy of two hours, is value for money right from the off. The first Cirque production to be set on ice, Crystal is the story of a girl misunderstood by those closest to her, who ventures off into a fresh new world of adventure.
A visual feast, Crystal features ice skating, rollerblading, clowns, acrobats, jugglers and, for the first time, a thumping rock and pop soundtrack. Breathtaking to watch, the gymnasts and skaters who make up the cast are simply at the top of their game. Furiously paced routines play out at breakneck pace as the story unfolds. From up in the rafters to hurtling down ramps at high speed, the stars of the show are truly outstanding.
Not as quirky as some of the previous Cirque productions, the storyline is straightforward to follow and features something for Cirque fans young and old. There’s plenty of humour, an extreme ice-blading display, and a suitably epic finale. Like Frozen meets Disney On Ice given that unique Cirque twist, Crystal is, incredibly, the Cirque teams 42nd production and it has been their best yet.
