Southwood Waltz – Album Review
The debut album from Los-Angeles singer-songwriter David Ayscue, Southwood Waltz is a stunning eight-track release details a man at the crossroads of youth and adulthood. Featuring whimsical arrangements and almost dreamlike acoustics, Southwood Waltz gives listeners an insight into some of the singer-songwriters most cherished memories describing the loves, characters, anxieties, and adventures that have colored his journey thus far.
Ayscue embodies a unique combination of Jack Johnson vibes with a Michael Bublé voice in his simply crafted album that is full of poetic vividness. Southwood Waltz is a classic singer-songwriter album… perfect for a summer road trip. Light, airy, and easy listening, Ayscue has mastered the ability to sing his stories with a certain lightness that keeps the listener engaged but lighthearted.
Singles like “New York” feature soothing vocals that sweep across gentle acoustic guitar melodies. Its minimalistic arrangement allows the sincerity of the song to shine through, while his lyrics spruce up the sometimes gritty reality of the city with a dreamlike charm. “Back In My Day” narrates Ayscue’s childhood in Marin County, CA. “It’s about feeling stuck as an adult… looking for something to grasp onto, and thinking back to a time when everything was so vivid and in-the-moment.” The hauntingly beautiful “Where We Land” begins as a stripped down, guitar/vocal pairing, then develops into a Mumford-and-Sons style, 4-on-the-floor anthem with a horn section to boot.
Needless to say, Southwood Waltz is only the tip of the iceberg for the talented artist who surely has the talent and skill to climb to the heights of the music industry.
