What a show! The 2016 MMVAs were fiery hot on so many levels. One of those levels includes the weather. The heat wave was almost unbearable. But on an even higher level, the performances were outstanding. Each act brought everything they had on that stage.

American fashion model, Gigi Hadid hosted the show and had an outfit change every time she re-appeared. Hadid is well known in the entertainment industry and did not disappoint as host of the biggest awards show in Canada, celebrating music.

The biggest winner of the night was Drake who took home five awards but was a no-show to the event. Other big winners included Fifth Harmony, Alessia Cara and Nick Jonas who dedicated his win and performance to the families and victims of the recent shootings in Orlando, Florida.

Opening the night for us was an energetic performance by hit duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis who performed their newest single “Dance Off.” They were later joined on stage by YouTube sensation Lilly Singh (a.k.a. Superwoman) and model Amber Rose. Singh and Rose legitimately had a dance off and it was pretty intense. Singh showed off her slick moves while Rose twerked her way through her turn.

Next, Brampton native Alessia Cara gave a wild performance delivering her hit “Wild Things.” She began the opening beat by giving a solo drum performance (with one drum) that got the crowd head banging before she began to sing. A group of dancers and singers backed up her performance.

Also in attendance Sunday night were Shawn Hook and Hailee Steinfeld who delivered a sweet medley of “Sound of Your Heart” and “Rock Bottom.” Tegan & Sara sang their hearts out to their hit single “Boyfriend” as colourful confetti fell from the sky. July Talk performed “Push + Pull” which was hype and got the crowd jumping.

There were two performances Sunday night that were outstanding and got the audience jumping simultaneously, and those were Desiigner and Hedley. Desiigner performed his popular hit “Panda” and also attempted to crowd surf… Key word: attempted. The fans LITERALLY ‘lost control’ when Hedley performed their newest release “Lose Control.” Lead singer Jacob Hoggard knows how to put on a show and get the crowd pumped.

On the other hand, James Bay and Shawn Mendes separately shared an intimate performance with the audience with their hits “Let It Go” and “Treat You Better.” Both of these boys had the crowd swaying their arms.

Closing out the show was Nick Jonas – who got extremely ‘close’ to the fans when he performed “Close” on the streets – along with Fifth Harmony who flipped their hair and booty-popped more times than I could count when they sang “Work From Home.”

Presenters of the night included: digital superstar Nash Grier, Pretty Little Liars stars: Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell and Lucy Hale, Criminal Minds’ Shemar Moore, Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey, YouTube stars: Bethany Mota and Lilly Singh, and much, much more. Overall, Sunday’s award show was spectacular. It was filled with such high energy from the performers, presenters and the fans. It was truly a night to remember with so many unforgettable moments including those during commercial breaks that only fans in attendance would have seen. *Cough* Hadid almost took a flip while walking down the steps to centre stage. *Cough* Besides that, it seemed as though everyone had the time of their lives.
