Cephalic Carnage – “Misled By Certainty”

Now, this is a band I’ve heard of in the past, but sadly not actually had any exposure to. Nevertheless, as soon as the first note of this release hit my ear drums what I heard was thoroughly unexpected and thankfully, extremely welcome. Elements of experimental metal, a nice thick slab of grinding ripping guitars, insane drumming and throat lacerating vocals are all served up by way of a stomach churning and bloodied cement mixer pouring its contents directly into your ears.

Rapidly pulsating and mind ‘drilling’ intense, Cephalic Carnage’s latest release Misled by Certainty treads in similar paths to other bands, but what I most appreciate is their ability to throw in the unexpected.

“Abraxas of Filth” flows from an eclectic arpeggio progression to mashing steam hammer metal, and back for a moment then back again. There are straight ahead thrash/grind songs on this album, “Pure Horses” being one of them (If extremely short – ala Anal Cunt), but this album has more in it that simply standard run of the mill thrash/grind.

The main point which i believe sets this release (and band) apart from their peers is the way that sometimes incredibly intricate ideas are all entwined with demented riffs, and served up by a charging hoard of anarchic and bone crushing guitars.

This album annihilates what I had managed to cram in of their previous material; it is an overtly fierce and technically precise voyage through extreme and grinding metal. It knocked me clean off my feet and kept on punching my in the face. Simply quite awesome!  [ END ]
