Album Review
On Burning Shores – “Common Ground”
Back in 2009 I did a show review for Winds Of Plague. At that show I became a fan of one of the opening bands; none other than On Burning Shores. A few months later I got their CD Common Ground. Now that I own this record, I will be able to sing along next time I see them. Breakdown…
Back in 2009 I did a show review for Winds Of Plague. At that show I became a fan of one of the opening bands; none other than On Burning Shores. A few months later I got their CD Common Ground. Now that I own this record, I will be able to sing along next time I see them. Breakdown…
The disc starts off with an intro guitar track named “Bridges” which leads into the next song “Dare To Try.” The intro riff gets overlayed by an intense breakdown. The rest of the album consists of thrashing guitars, melodic overlays and destructive throwdown parts. Vocals on the album range from low pig squeals to vocalist Michael Bacon’s shouts. Overlaying these vocals at times are group chants which can be heard in “End Of Ignorance.” A song I really enjoyed was “Dare To Try.” Guitars throughout the whole track are catchy, but intense leaving your ears anticipating the rest of the record. Another song that stands out is “Blade To Betray.” The instrumentals switch between a slow pace melody and a heavy breakdown, then flip back to the melodies again. Each song on Common Ground is ecstatic, but these two songs stand out the most to me.
Justin Marc Lloyd of Black Sea did the artwork and layout of Common Ground. The only real image is the cover with the mirrored bridges. The rest of the art is consistent colours with writing over top. The overall imagery of the album looks very professional to the point that I wouldn’t even know they’re an independent band. Congratulations for this DIY effort.
On Burning Shores have created a phenomenal first release in Common Ground. If anyone gets a chance to see them live, they definitely should. Their sets are intense and tight. Fans of Unearth, The Classic Struggle, Darkest Hour and Rosesdead will dig this band. I am proud to know this band come from my area of Ontario. [ END ]
