Mower – “Make It A Double”

When I first began listening to Make It A Double I was completely taken aback, I had not heard of these guys and was honestly not expecting it to be half this good. Nevertheless, once the disc got rolling, I found myself drawn into Mower’s world and I didn’t want to leave.

Mower comes out of the box swinging on the opening track, “The Party” a remarkably heavy, extremely powerful metal tune that kicks some serious ass. The auditory mauling carries on through the first eight songs, with straight ahead metal tunes that are fast furious and heavy and meant for two things; getting the listeners neck snapping and getting the pit circulating.

Just when I thought I had the band figured out though I stumbled across the tune “Faded” which threw me a curve ball. It is a much more subdued, melodic, almost Ska-influenced rock tune that serves as the turning point in the disc. The last five tunes all have this same characteristic. I almost felt I was not even listening to the same band anymore. This is not a bad thing though. Quite the contrary; I feel it is a testament to Mower’s ability to write a diversity of good solid songs. I feel it is this mixture of genres that sets the band apart from many of their contemporaries.

Favorite tracks of mine on this disc include “The Song We Don’t Speak Of” and “Escaped,” both of which are completely unbelievable tunes that rock so hard I almost broke a sweat listening to them. At the end of the day, I feel this is a very good record from a band we will undoubtedly hear more from in the very near future. Check this one out, it has a lot to offer.  [ END ]
