Album Review
Carnifex – “Hell Chose Me”
One day, as a friend visited me, I introduced him to the song ‘Lie To My Face’ by Carnifex. After listening he told me the meaning of their name, the Latin word for executioner, which fits them perfectly. A few years later Carnifex released a new album named Hell Chose Me. On the album cover is the image of a priest who has executed some sheep for an offering, a tie-in with the names of both the band and the album title.

The album begins with the title track “Hell Chose Me” and from there it plows through 10 deathening tracks to eradicate your ear drums. Ryan Gudmunds and Cory Arford’s guitaring on the album is pure speed picking that flows smoothly into some intense breakdowns. Fred Calderon’s bass follows behind the guitars creating a backbone for the band. Shawn Cameron’s drums are full of blast beats and intense double bass action. To overlay all these intense instruments is Scott Lewis with his crazy low to high growls. Personally I would put him on my ‘top ten growlers of all time’ list.
One thing I would like to point out about Hell Chose Me is that the songs, when compared to their past releases, are more straight forward death metal with less breakdowns. But if you’re a fan of breakdowns, never fear, they’re still there and are brutal as ever. Every track on this album is amazing. I have listened to this record a copious number of times and still can’t figure out which song is my favourite, so I shall say they are all my favourite.
Carnifex definitely has shown us that American death metal will never die, but instead will keep on progressing like every other genera of music. Fans of Suicide Silence, Arise And Ruin, Job For A Cowboy and Whitechapel will love this release. Now I chose you to go buy Hell Chose Me. [ END ]
