Sixx:A.M. – The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack [Album Review]

A narrative of his downward spiral while addicted to heroin and playing in one of the biggest bands on the planets, Nikki Sixx’s new band, Sixx:A.M. has released a soundtrack to his best selling book ‘The Heroin Diaries’. The Heroin Diaries is a story of pain, heartbreak and ultimately redemption. In the spoken word intro “X-mas in Hell” the listener becomes an intimately involved observer in Nikki’s train wreck world of drug abuse and chaos. The events in these songs have been chronicled in numerous books including ‘The Dirt,’ ‘Tommy Land’ and now ‘The Heroin Diaries.’

This record is a tale of Nikki’s excesses and overdoses told in chronological order as the album progresses. From cries for help in the tune “Pray For Me” to physically dying in “Heart Failure”, this is something you can’t turn away from; kind of like gawking at a terrible car wreck on the highway, you just can’t help it. The CD culminates with the song “Life After Death” which ends things on a very positive note. Nikki Sixx is writing some of the best music of his life now that he is clean and sober. The man who penned most of Mötley Crüe’s songs, (At least the really good ones) is at the top of his game.

Aside from the lyrical content of this album, the songs all stand on their own as good straight up rock and roll tunes that are sure to receive tons of airplay. As a matter of fact, the first single, “Life Is Beautiful” is receiving quite a bit of radio play as of this writing.

Bottom line: this is a disc that I would highly recommend to anyone who likes good, well-produced Rock and Roll; the bonus here is that the songs on this disc are actually about something meaningful.
