Album Review
Divinity
Allegory (2008)

Sometimes you will find a band that has all the components to be uber amazing. Other times you will find a band that just so happens to suck huge, hairy testicles. You might even find a band with only one or two outstanding musicians. Divinity just so happens to fall into the third category, and their album Allegory shows listeners possible greatness and absolute failure at the exact same time! Amazing, isn’t it?
The key ingredient that makes this band successful is the electrifying intensity of Sacha Laskow on lead guitar. He has an immeasurable amount of talent with his trusted axe. If you were to cut this man he would bleed like any other man, but to retaliate he would not harm by means of physical contact; instead, he would tear your body to shreds with his mind-bending guitar solos.
Moving past Laskow’s undeniable talent, the rest of the band seems to fall short in the musical ability department. I am sure that if they were playing with someone who wasn’t as gifted then they might sound pretty damn good as a unit; however, by combining such an elite guitarist with a bunch of mediocre musicians the end result is awful.
Divinity call themselves a death metal band, which explains the constant double-kick one hears from Brett Duncan’s drum kit. It also explains why the rest of the instrumentation is fairly loud and in-your-face. Yet Divinity is missing a huge component of the death metal genre! The vocals are extremely whiny and you can understand each and every word. I don’t know about you, but when I think of death metal I think of growls that seem to be in a foreign language that I can‘t understand.
Divinity has potential to do great things. To be able to reach that full potential they will have to make some major lineup changes or even change their style a little bit to match the vocals. [ END ]
