Album Review

Ben Kweller

Self-Titled (2006)

There was a time when “Rock” turned a bit mellow and we started calling it “Folk” or “Folk Rock.” This genre included the likes of artists such as Bright Eyes and David Melillo. But one artist stands out and that’s this dude… Ben Kweller.

I first heard his hit song “Sundress” and thought, “…alright here’s another guy who’s gone mellow and is going to bore me to death.” But to my surprise that song really kicks ass. It has such a punchy chorus that reminds me of the Monkeeys.

I love this album; it’s stripped down in a very honest way. It’s simple, does not have many overdubs and is essentially pure emotion. From the simple photograph of him on the CD cover to the simplicity in the lyrics, this album keeps it “real.”

I could listen to Ben’s voice all day; it is really soothing. Thanks to Evan Dando from the Lemonheads for ringing Ben up and getting the ball rolling!

The Piano in “Penny on the Train Track” is so classic feeling, and joyous. FYI Kweller plays all the instruments featured on the album! Check this disc out now if you’re into soft rock with an honest twist!
