Down are an interesting choice of headliner for the first day. Yes, there is no doubting that Phil Anselmo is a heavy metal legend but, to follow the theatrics of Dimmu Borgir with a set of weed-soaked stoner anthems was always going to be a tough call. Still, Anselmo and his Down brethren pull out a stunning set for an audience who soak up every weed-stained riff of the likes of “Witch Tripper” and “Lifer” while “Hail The Leaf” sums up everything that is great about Down and proves why they were the perfect way to end a great first day at Bloodstock.

Both Fleshgod Apocalypse and Wintersun played the Irving plaza to a totally pumped up and sold out crowd. The mosh pit was in full effect with plenty of crowd surfing to boot. Wintersun killed it with a hour plus long set. Jari Mäenpää’s vocals were tight as they ran through tune after solid tune.

Arriving on site, we’re greeted by a troop of knights marching towards the VIP entrance. However, this is Bloodstock so we expect no less. The UK’s premier metal festival returns with a line-up that is a heavy metal fans wet dream, but there is a long way to go until thrash titans Slayer bring the festival to a thunderous finale on Sunday night. Day one of Bloodstock Open Air opens up with Municipal Waste, Dark Funeral and headliner King Diamond amongst the acts to grace the stage.
