Last Wednesday The Smashing Pumpkins rolled through Toronto and stopped at Scotiabank Arena on their “Shiny And Oh So Bright” tour. Local rockers and fan favourites Metric opened things up. Compared to the last couple times I saw Metric, they got off to a bit of a subdued start. Singer Emily Haines was pretty much stationary for the first 2 tracks, but then… once that third song began, she exploded with energy and was bouncing all over the stage. A really enjoyable band to watch, and with a new album scheduled for release next month, we just might get the chance to see Metric again soon. Metric’s first 3 songs were “Love You Back”, “Risk”, and “Dressed To Suppress”.

A short intermission and the house lights are dimmed. Frontman Billy Corgan emerges from behind the curtain and starts with a solo version of “Disarm”, shortly thereafter the rest of the band join him. A ramp stretches over and behind the drum kit and Corgan makes his way across it wearing a shiny hoody and what looked like a skirt during a cover of Bowie’s “Space Oddity”.

The last time I saw The Pumpkins was at Massey Hall about 20 years ago, but then I kind of lost track of them. I don’t really know why because they’re a great band to both see and hear. Outside the venue, I overheard a few passers by saying “Smashing Pumpkins? I didn’t even know they were still together.” Well, thousands of people heard about it and packed the arena making for a spectacular evening.

Why can’t we go back to a simpler time… like “1979”?
