Grace Potter Delivers ‘Mother Road’ to a Sold-Out State Theatre [Photos]

Vermont singer-songwriter Grace Potter is currently in the midst of a multi-month tour supporting her new album, Mother Road, released last August. Along for the ride, which stretches into mid-late March, is country artist Brittney Spencer. We were fortunate to attend the first night of the tour as it made its way to a sold-out State Theatre in Portland, Maine, on a chilly January 19th!
The venue was absolutely packed by the time support act Brittney Spencer took to the stage. It was a momentous day for Spencer as her debut album, My Stupid Life, was out as of that day! Her captivating stage presence and infectious energy made her performance fly by as she played several of her new songs, including “Night In,” “If You Say So,” and “I Got Time.”
Now warmed up from dancing to Spencer, the eager crowd was ready for Grace Potter. Potter and her band emerged onto the road-trip-themed stage—which was decked out with glowing cacti and neon signs, a vintage gas pump display, and other sights you might encounter on a trip down US Route 66–and launched right into “Lady Vagabond.”
Potter seems to be striking a balance between playing her new solo material while also not holding back on the older fan-favourite tracks from her years performing as Grace Potter & the Nocturnals on this run. Be it new material or old, the crowd ate it up–singing and dancing along as Potter, now wielding her signature Gibson Flying V guitar, continued with “Medicine,” “Ah Mary,” and the album title track “Mother Road.”
Later on, in one of the highlights of the night’s set, Potter brought Spencer back out to help her out on “You and Tequila,” a Kenny Chesney track Potter features. Her lengthy set closed with a double encore that included a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” As her tour has just gotten underway, there are still plenty of opportunities to catch Potter live.
