Iffer Premieres His Enthralling New Single “Wounded Hoof”
Every musician has their own preferred songwriting process, but those that are perhaps most fascinating are the more experimental songwriters like Iffer. Today, Iffer, the songwriting name of Christopher Collin Bump, premieres his unique new single “Wounded Hoof.” It’s the third released single so far from the Georgia-based singer, guitarist, and producer.
Despite his previous, more collaborative work, Iffer is all Collin Bump. He oversees the entire process, from scratch to the finished product. You may recall him as the frontman of the angular desert rock, math pop band The Parallels.
Discussing “Wounded Hoof” and the intriguing process behind writing the song, Iffer tells us:
“‘Wounded Hoof’ started like most of my songs, as a guitar riff. I wrote and recorded the main guitar lick with my Red Burst Kauer Korona (guitar). I focused on the A section first, treating it as a loop, and layering in effects (mainly feathering in the Hologram Electronics Microcosm) and other instrumentation that resulted in an organic riser to the chorus.
“At this point, lyrics were forming into a dark, self-deprecating theme which led me to give the chorus a suitable heaviness. The last minute or so of the track was spent sonically lifting from darker tones while doubling down on the lyrical themes of wrestling with loneliness and its connection to death. Drums were recorded by Joshua Deitner (aka Ditner) which was the last step in tracking. Josh also mixed and mastered the track and gave it a much-needed fresh pair of ears before release.”
The three singles that Iffer has released thus far are all a buildup and a prelude to his debut full-length album. His debut single, “Dust,” was released last summer, a collaboration with Ditner. This was followed by the more synth-heavy “Confusing Two Movies.”
Iffer has such an interesting and diverse process, as you can hear in “Wounded Hoof.” The song features lots of layered harmonies, vocal sequences modulating, some lofty falsetto, and some more minimalist, jangly guitar. The singer and songwriter is in the process of completing that debut, with a goal to release it by the end of the year.
In the meanwhile, he’d be ever so glad for you to get acquainted with his ambitious, dynamic brand of songwriting.
