Indie supergroup boygenius make an unforgettable Yorkshire debut at The Piece Hall in Halifax. Check out the photos here.
During a lifetime, every music fan will be able to name those gigs which have been truly special. By that, I don’t mean those gigs where they played all your favourite songs. I mean those gigs that truly tapped into every emotion in your body. For over five thousand fans packed into the stunning surroundings of The Piece Hall in Halifax, the Yorkshire debut for indie supergroup boygenius will be one of those gigs.
Fans travelled far and wide to see the three friends perform, most of whom have already trekked up from London, where the group played their UK debut earlier in the week and most will be back tomorrow night when Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers perform the second of their sold-out nights here in Halifax.
As an intimate a capella video of the three girls performing “Without You Without Them” backstage plays out, the noise level reaches deafening, and then, hurtling out of the wings (from where Baker almost slips head over heels), the band crashes into “$20.” It’s a spectacularly energetic opening as the three friends thrash and headbang around the stage through their crashing slacker rock setlist.
A display of truly raw emotion, what makes this band and this night so special is the connection they have with their fans. From front to back, fans scream the words back to songs like “Bite The Hand” and “Me & My Dog,” in what are truly magical scenes. With each of the three girls taking turns to lead the band, a crushingly emotional “Letters to an Old Poet” sees fans being asked to put their phones away while “Salt In The Wound” ends with Dacus and Bridgers diving head first into the crowd with nobody stopping hundreds of phones capturing an unforgettable end to this magical night.
