Added Color – “Unlucky (Remix)” [Song Review]
Sleek and bleak, Added Color’s “Unlucky (Remix)” provides a fresh, groovy direction to the song that makes for a unique blending of rock with an international flair.
Last year was a highlight year for the genre-blending trio Added Color. In addition to soundtracking Steve Aoki’s new trading card game “Metazoo,” the band also dropped a number of singles. One of which was the enchanting “Unlucky.” The band has now revisited the song, breathing new life into it in the form of a moody remix.
Distorted synth bass and prominent drums build the foundation for the brooding number. One of the greatest strengths of this reimagination is the rhythm section. With two-thirds of the trio originating from Brazil (brothers Daniel Freiberg, and Kiko Freiberg), the band allows such regional flavours to shine through the enhanced and explosive percussion. Due to this, there is a deeper feeling of urgency and danger from the spacious previous rendition.
Reflecting on the inspiration for the song, singer and guitarist Tim Haggerty states: “The original song was written during the global shutdown, where we were all lonely and emotionally drained. I started to feel like I was in a fated cycle of misfortune. The world started moving again at a fast pace and I felt the same, so we decided to make an upbeat version of the song that matched the same feeling in our current state.”
Lyrically, Unlucky reads like a recitation of anxieties: “I’ve always been unlucky / My mirrors break somehow / I’m almost out of money / And my drink taste watered down / I’m lightheaded with a heavy, heavy heart / It’s all I’ve ever known / I wonder who will take me in / Once I lose my home.”
Additionally, the reimagined track is coupled with a digitally animated video that shapeshifts through a kaleidoscope of abstract dystopian landscapes. Altogether the pairing solidifies an overarching sense of unease.
Sleek and bleak, “Unlucky (Remix)” provides a fresh, groovy direction to the song that makes for a unique blending of rock with an international flair.
