Wretched Tongues – ‘Ulter Praefinitum’ [Album Review]
Wretched Tongues’ debut, ‘Alone In Death’, takes deathcore fans down a darker, more violent path. Read our review here.
There are two types of deathcore bands in the world. Firstly, there is the type of deathcore band that play throwaway, straight-out-of-the-rulebook deathcore, packed with easy to digest hooks the kind of which your average mainstream metal fan looking for something a bit heavier can pick up on. We all know those bands, packaged up, ready to ship out then quickly forget about. Then, there is the second type of band of which New Hampshire crew Wretched Tongues fall very much into with their ominous new disc Ulter Praefinitum.
Crushingly heavy throughout the course of their debut album, Wretched Tongues have shown they are going to be a force to reckoned with over the coming twelve months. Falling into this category of deathcore bands who are much darker and more sinister than their more mainstream counterparts, the music bands like Wretched Tongues spew out is truly next level. Preferring to pummel your face into the wall rather than give you something brain-numbingly simple for you to nod along to, tracks like “Into The Nothing” and “Call of the Chasm” take you down an altogether more violent, darker road.
Hellishly black, albums like Ulter Praefinitum are the kind of albums that cancel out any preconception that deathcore is just death metal for music fans who have discovered the genre after playing their copies of Iowa into dust. Bands like Wretched Tongues show the darker, more intelligent side to the genre. Down-tuned guitars pummel away at your face through a suffocating, uneasy air while vocalist Brett howls away like a man possessed. Each individual aspect of this band possesses the kind of quality that most bands can only dream of. Combined, as you can hear during the harrowing “Mortality”, this makes Wretched Tongues simply unstoppable.
Considering this is a debut album, Ulter Praefinitum is an absolutely breathtaking listen and one that sets the bar high for the New Hampshire band to follow. This isn’t an album taken straight from the deathcore production line, this is the kind of pure black-souled rage that drag the listener into the depths of hell where this collection was spewed from.
