Back in the US after three years, British rock band Wolf Alice stopped at The Vic Theatre in Chicago, IL to promote their newest album Blue Weekend.
It was the first night of the tour for opener Bria, who joined halfway through the Blue Weekend trek. Made up of multi-instrumentalist Bria Salmena and Duncan Hay Jennings, with touring keyboardist Jaime McCuaig, Bria is anything but a country band, in fact, it is hard to pinpoint their exact genre, as each song’s influences range from dark country to jazz, to pop. Halfway through their set, I overheard someone call them “a country Mazzy Star” and I would have to agree (which is a HUGE compliment in my own opinion).
Through their half-an-hour set, Bria played tunes off their newest album Cuntry Covers Vol. 1 including a cover of “Green Rocky Road” by Karen Dalton, and “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” by The Walker Brothers.
Wolf Alice started off their set as only they could, with an intense amount of energy, foreshadowing the awesome show to come as they played “Smile” and “You’re A Germ.” As their set continued, the crowd didn’t miss a beat as they sang along, song after song. This was especially evident during “Lipstick on the Glass,” a crowd favourite.
The quartet easily jumped back and forth from new tunes to old favourites, choosing to close their set with “The Last Man on Earth” and “Moaning Lisa Smile,” with a too-short encore of “Don’t Delete The Kisses.” Catch Wolf Alice on the rest of their Blue Weekend tour.
