Gemïny Drops Dream-Pop EP ‘My Dark. Twisted Valentine’
The dark and captivating release, ‘My Dark. Twisted Valentine’ officially released on Valentine’s Day 2024, leaving listeners twisted.
Independent pop-soul artist Gemïny continues to captivate audiences with the Valentine’s Day release of his latest EP, My Dark. Twisted Valentine. Featuring six emotionally charged tracks, the EP delves into themes of mental health, depression, self-image, heartbreak, love, abuse, trauma, guilt, regret, and insomnia, offering a raw and honest exploration of the artist’s inner world.
The EP is more than just a collection of tracks; it is a manifestation of Gemïny’s introspection, drawing inspiration from recurring dreams that have left an indelible mark on his life. Gemïny’s creative process for My Dark. Twisted Valentine is rooted in a desire to communicate directly with his audience, sharing the intricacies of his being. The artist’s unique perspective allows for a profound exploration of the effects of these dreams on the central love story, as well as the psychological reasoning behind the decisions made within that narrative.
Gemïny comments:
“In ‘Vice,’ I dive into the depths of my own struggles with depression and self-image. It’s not about a person but echoes the internal strife we all confront. The ‘relationship’ in the song mirrors the ongoing battle within.”
The sound of the EP is a moody yet eclectic mix, rooted in the Pop genre but with a diverse range of influences. Gemïny takes listeners on a sonic journey, from the angsty and chaotic “Alone”, blending hip-hop, classical, and rock influences, to the yearning melodies of 00’s R&B and Pop ballads in “Run Me Down”. The EP also features upbeat reggaeton-influenced guitars, synth-heavy riffs, and 808-heavy club-centric vibes, creating a unique and modern experience that seamlessly connects multiple Pop eras.
The artist adds:
“I’ve really grown to appreciate the struggle of putting together a narrative that flows seamlessly. Choosing from a bunch of songs and ensuring their stories harmonized while making sense in the overall sequence was no easy task.”
Hailing from Raleigh, NC, Sage “Gemïny” Wesley fuses raspy rock and smooth jazz to create a unique sound that keeps audiences grooving. Gemïny studied music composition at the University of South Carolina under Composition Professor John Fitz. After a brief hiatus in 2020, Gemïny began participating in freelance work such as recording hooks and background vocals for aspiring artists to raise money for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). This charity work grew into booking a few small gigs around Columbia where Gemïny performed backup and keys for various bands. Gemïny’s raw vocals and authentic sound make listeners feel like they’re in the audience at one of his live shows or alongside him in the recording studio. Connecting lyrical expression to heartbreak, guilt, lost love, and more, Gemïny displays a strong affinity for storytelling with songs reminiscent of a page ripped from a classic love story: a redefined iteration of the Heartbreak Hotel.
