Canadian electro-pop duo Choirz kicks off 2024 with the release of their sophomore EP, Ecdysis, and a new music video for the EP’s feature track “Grinding Dirt.”
Choirz, who hails from Pembroke, Ontario, emerged from the diverse experiences of lifelong friends Brandon Kennedy and Christopher Chartrand. Kennedy had been a member of several Canadian rock and metal bands, including Goat Horn, Zuku, and Flying Fortress, while Chartrand was a member of Kill Cheerleader, Aciidz, Zuku, and was the live drummer for Crystal Castles. Together, along with songwriter/musician Jed Corriveau, who contributes to the songwriting but does not perform live with the duo, craft haunting electro-pop soundscapes, blending intricate synth rhythms with emotionally charged lyrics that delve into the depths of heartbreak.
The EP title “Ecdysis” succinctly encapsulates the lyrical themes of the songs and the current state of the band in a single word. While traditionally associated with reptiles shedding their skin, it aptly conveyed Choirz’s transition from the confines of the jam room to the spotlight of the stage. Additionally, it captured the sentiment of breathing new life into material composed a few years ago that was finally recorded.
While “Grinding Dirt” is about seeking escape from the clutches of a toxic person, additional tracks on the EP delve into themes such as embracing the hand that life deals you on “Expo 86,” and the profound spectrum of human emotions encompassing love, loss, and yearning on “Never Enough.”
The duo’s commitment to pushing boundaries in the electro-pop genre is evident in every track, making “Ecdysis” a must-listen for music enthusiasts looking for fresh and innovative new sounds. Catch Choirz at Toronto’s Bovine Sex Club on Friday, March 1, 2024.
