New year, new sound, new album, new possibilities is how you may sum up Funeral Homes’ approach to their brand new album Blue Heaven. Officially due for release today, November 11th, via Lonely Ghost Records, the follow-up to 2019’s full-length debut Lavender House, asserts Funeral Homes as not just a bedroom project for frontwoman Sofia Poppert but a full-fledged band, adapting and changing their style from release to release, out to define themselves as one of today’s most dynamic indie acts.

After the release of Lavender House in 2019, Poppert made a sudden change in her musical focus shortly after. She really rekindled her love for shoegaze in 2020, which led to a shift in sound, which you can now hear in full effect on Blue Heaven. The songs, remarkably recorded in just 48 hours with Griffin Marthe (Cathedral Bella, Memento), combine distorted, dreamy, ethereal sounds with Poppert’s reflections on her own life experiences.

Reflecting on the album, Poppert shares:

“While we recorded it in only two days, I spent two years writing this album. It’s my most focused and meaningful work yet. At its core, Blue Heaven is about growth, exploring various aspects of my life including love, gender identity, and spirituality. I’m extremely proud of this record and can’t wait to share it.”

In the time spent recording this record and doing so during the various pandemic lockdowns, Poppert really refocused her creative energy with Funeral Homes. For about five years, this was nothing but a bedroom project, but through the recording of Blue Heaven, Poppert developed the focus required to make this into a full-fledged touring act. She is now joined by drummer Jake Rodriguez who contributed a lot to the making of this record.

Blue Heaven is a more focused collection of songs than Lavender House was, with a much more lively, free-flowing sonic palette. It takes time to hone a sound, and that’s what Poppert has accomplished here. With such an emergence, it certainly makes you enthusiastic about the future possibilities for Funeral Homes as they continue to grow and develop as a unit.
