Devastating Light – “epilogue: final letter” [Free Song Download]
Forgive Devastating Light for their lack of a sunny disposition, but they’d prefer to stay focused on the harsh realities of today. The well-regarded, do-it-yourself, post-metal/doom/sludge band has returned with a new album titled I have already failed you, and “Epilogue: Final Letter,” a special bonus track that the band recorded for the album which we’re now offering as an exclusive free MP3 download.
Released on March 28th via Italian label Planet K Records, I have already failed you is a concept record, centred around a man suffering from depression and becoming a new father, while the world continues to crumble around him. It looks specifically at feelings of not doing enough, or not being enough for others in your life, and the fear of the child inheriting the same depressive state. Is it even acceptable to bring a child into such a harsh world? This is a question that the record asks.
Regarding “Epilogue: Final Letter,” the band said, “This is a special epilogue song for the concept album and it is not available on any current physical release or any streaming service for that matter. The song is a suicide letter the protagonist of the main album has written for his daughter.”
From Tampere, Finland, Teemu Toikka is the brainchild behind Devastating Light, an accomplished veteran of the Finnish punk scene. Toikka plays, records, mixes, and masters every aspect of this project. Recording I have already failed you felt like a necessity for Toikka. The name of the project Devastating Light refers to how the symptoms of depression seem to get worse at certain times of the year, such as the winter when there is less daylight. But as the spring brings more light and optimism, it only seems to make things worse.
These are serious mental issues that Toikka investigates through this project, questions that abound, and only seem to become more pronounced as time goes by.
