Moon vs Sun with Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk – The Mod Club, Toronto – May 27, 2015
By Kat Harlton
Wednesday night’s Moon Vs Sun show at Toronto’s Mod Club Theatre featuring Our Lady Peace front man Raine Maida and singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk was a sweaty and packed affair.
The Juno Award winners performed an intimate show mixing select older pieces from their respective catalogs with covers and never before heard material. There was an openness and vulnerability to their performance that I wasn’t expecting. They shared personal stories, interacted with the audience, poked fun at marriage, and projected a sense of familiarity and nostalgia.
Although it was billed as an ‘intimate evening’ it was hard not to be reminded of their 90’s super-stardom listening to them exercise control and balance over their powerful and distinctive vocals.
They took risks with some of their popular work, changing tempos slightly, and replacing each other’s vocal parts. They played numerous fan favourites such as Maida’s Yellow Brick Road off his solo album Hunter’s Lullaby, Kreviazuk’s Before You and Our Lady Peace’s Innocent. Kreviazuk also did awesome covers of The Pixie‘s Where Is My Mind and OLP‘s Superman’s Dead.
The duo returned for an encore and ended the night perfectly with a relatively new Moon Vs Sun duet I Love It When You Make Me Beg. I had such a great time and I’d easily see another Moon Vs Sun show again.
