What one piece of gear do you use to obtain your signature sound?
JJ: My Ahead drumsticks.
What about it makes it so important to you?
JJ: The Ahead sticks have a really nice weight to them because of their metal/alloy core. Plus I use the TC models which are a bit bigger and longer than standard sticks. I feel confident that I can really do some damage, so I can play harder and get the sounds I’m looking for. They’ve become an essential tool for my playing style.
What are the major pros and cons?
JJ: Pros: they have durability unlike any other sticks I’ve tried. One pair can last me weeks out on tour, compared to wooden sticks which I’d go through a few pairs in a single show. Cons: they’re too nice to toss out to the crowd every night!
How long have you had it, how do you use it, would you ever change it?
JJ: I’ve been using Ahead sticks for about 8 years now, 2 years as an endorsee. I use them whenever I play – rehearsals, live, recording… I don’t think I’ll ever go back to regular sticks.
Any final thoughts or comments on the gear?
JJ: If you’re a heavy hitter, give these a try.
