Seattle-based alternative artist Thavoron has unveiled his new single/music video, “My Man,” a song exploring the disparate status of a pedestrian relationship in which one partner does just enough to keep the relationship from ending. In contrast, the other partner finds every reason to stay.

Thavoron explains, “I just wanted to shift the narrative of the idea of the phrase ‘my man’ from a place of praise towards him as a person, to a reflection of myself and my values… you can tell a lot about people by the company they keep.”

“My Man” rolls out stark, stripped-down tones that reveal a feeling of poignant isolation. Drenched in reverb, Thavoron’s wistful voice narrates a longing for genuine love. The harmonics elevate, adding heavy, edgy textures atop crashing percussion as Thavoron’s vocals become a sighing, plaintive wail.

The wall-of-sound outro ends abruptly, explosively. The implication is that a decision has been made. Thavoron accepts that he doesn’t need a romantic partner to give meaning to his life.

The video, directed by Maddie Ludgate, was shot in black and white, depicting the sharp division between emotional fulfillment and the brooding darkness of unrequited love akin to being buried alive.
