The Skinny: American Heritage roars and rages on Sedentary, due out March 2011 via Translation Loss Records. The Chicago quartet’s new album steamrolls the senses with brash polyrhythmic riffs, vitriolic punk attitude and destructive seasick rhythms. “Sickening Rebellion” rolls with a calculated hardcore intensity, while “WWDHD” mounts from chugging ominous distortion into an epic metallic explosion. American Heritage preserve the abrasive amalgam of technicality and brutality they’re known for, while refining it.
Even with glowing endorsement from tastemakers such as Revolver, Decibel, The Chicago Tribune, Metal Hammer and Classic Rock and unforgettable shows alongside the likes of Mastodon, Baroness and Pelican, American Heritage remains far from sedentary themselves. Shellhamer adds, “We’re too dumb to quit. We’ve never written music for anyone except for us. What continues to drive it is not giving a shit what anyone else thinks.”
Ultimately, American Heritage will never cease pummeling, and Sedentary is proof. Norden concludes, “Our relentlessness keeps us going. We still come at it with a Midwestern punk aesthetic – get up on stage, burn it up, and get loaded. If you feel like stabbing your dad, put our record on. If you don’t feel stabby but are open to it, maybe we get you stabby. We’re imagining a time when people would freak out at gigs. That time can come again – and not just meatheads freaking out, but nerds, too. We’re for nerd-meathead bro-ness. I think we embody that ethos.”
