Ivo Perelman, Chad Fowler, Reggie Workman, and Andrew Cyrille have announced their upcoming LP, Embracing the Unknown. The album is the first made by this formidable free-jazz quartet and will be out on March 29th, 2024, via Mahakala Music. Along with the announcement comes the release of their energetic and dazzling piece “Introspection.”
Embracing the Unknown stands as a distinctive intersection in the world of jazz, uniting the diverse talents and backgrounds of its quartet. Ivo Perelman from Brazil and Chad Fowler, a soul and R&B saxophonist from Arkansas and Memphis, bring their artistic influences, merging them with the seasoned expertise of jazz veterans Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille.
This album is marked by spontaneity and improvisational essence, capturing the musicians’ first-time collaboration without prearranged compositions or extensive dialogue. The unique appeal of this recording lies in its representation of a cross-generational and cross-cultural conversation within jazz.
The established rapport between Workman and Cyrille, coupled with Fowler’s fresh perspective and Perelman’s Brazilian roots, creates a dynamic and unprecedented musical narrative. Embracing the Unknown is more than an album; it’s a historical document showcasing the unifying and exploratory spirit of jazz, transcending geographical and generational boundaries to foster an authentic, creative exchange.
