The Bygones share new single “Whatever That Is” ahead of their debut album—to be announced—and an extensive spring tour. The song is an ode to an outing in 2020 and to what the details of those pandemic days revealed about love. Here, The Bygones’ heartening vocals, intricate plucking patterns, and swirling arrangements make for an evocative tonic.

Joshua Lee Turner on “Whatever That Is”:

“Unlike many New Yorkers, my wife Kelly and I never left the city all through the spring and summer of 2020. Since our apartment is so small, we spent a lot of time wandering our deserted neighborhood, going nowhere in particular, seeking but never really finding escape. On one such amble Kelly spotted a small painting someone had discarded and decided to carry it home. An amateur landscape evocative of a Miyazaki film or, to her, a sort of panacea away from all the pain of pandemic times. This song is literally about that story, but more so about what it reveals in Kelly – a will to find beauty in the mundane, even in the hardest times, even in something that I might have dismissed as trash. It’s an embrace of the things we discover in the people we love over time, and finding space for newness as a relationship grows over the years.”
