Interview with Fate bassist Devin Durrett

Heavy, Thunderous, Fast and in your face; Metal Blade recording act Fate is preparing to unleash their fury on the world. Their debut CD Vultures is set to be released on April 29th and is sure to have the industry buzzing. Well written songs, a brilliant production, and a ferocious attack that doesn’t stop; Vultures will leave fans begging for more. Each track assaults the listener with a unique brand of in your face brutality that is carried from track to track. These guys may be young but don’t hold that against them; Vultures proves they are a force to be reckoned with. Bassist Devin Durrett took some time out of his schedule to answer a few questions about the band and their new CD.

What can fans expect when they pick up a copy of your debut CD Vultures?
Devin: Fans who go out and buy our debut album Vultures can expect a fresh look on today’s metal genre. They can expect a hard hitting, fast paced, in your face yet musically satisfying CD. We tried to use all of our members’ influences when creating our songs. So we pretty much didn’t want fans to think they were hearing the same song over and over again.

Now that Vultures is complete and scheduled for an April 29th release how do you feel about it? Are you pleased with the outcome?
Devin: As always we are our own worst critics. Of course there is always something we would say “oh that would be sick right there” or “we should have done that instead.” But then we realize that nobody will ever know that. But yes we are very pleased with the overall outcome and sound of the record.

Fate began when you guys were still in middle and high school. What was it like playing in a band gaining national attention while still attending school?
Devin: Well the one thing it is, is a lot of work, especially when you add work on top of that. There was a point before the record was done that we were practicing 5 days a week for like 6 hours a day. I would get up in the morning and go to school then go right from school to work and then right from work to practice from usually 8:00pm to around 2:00 am or 3:00am. It was nuts. But in the end it all paid off and was more than worth it.

Did you find it intimidating being so young and opening for bands such as Animosity or the Vans Warped Tour?
Devin: Of course there’s always that little hint of nervousness and intimidation yes, but you can’t let it get to you. I mean if you think about all of these bands we were opening for were in the same shoes as us at one point and knew exactly how it was. But everyone we meet is always amazing and always looking to help and give us advice. We’re always open for some good advice.

Give us some insight into Vultures and the meaning behind its title.
Devin: Well the meaning behind the title, ‘Vultures’, is that every person in their own way is no better than a vulture. Whether it is always looking out for themselves or scavenging to survive no matter what.

What was the writing process like for the CD? Did you guys all write together? How long did it take?
Devin: The writing for this CD was really intense and most definitely the WRONG way to write a CD. There were tons of lineup changes that made it hard to come together and create a solid sound. Eventually we got a very solid lineup when our good friends in another local band Debello Castrum decided to join forces with us. By that point we really didn’t have time to write an album the way it is supposed to be written (if there really is a right way). But as I said earlier, we practiced 5 days a week and pulled it off. I do wish we had more time; it would have made it that much better.

Any tracks on the record that or personal favorites or have a good stories behind them?
Devin: Well my personal favorite is the title track. It happens to be an instrumental song. We always said that we would write one but just didn’t have enough time with all the deadlines and whatnot. So while in the studio we decided the CD wouldn’t be complete without an instrumental so we gave it a quick shot. We pumped the song out in about thirty minutes and it still surprises me to this day that it came out so well.

What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Devin: I really do believe that actually signing to Metal Blade Records is an insane accomplishment. They are the greatest group of people and it’s a good feeling to know they are behind us all the way to the top. Sometimes I still can’t believe that it is actually for real. But I hope to keep topping that moment and having more and more fun along the way.

What is next for Fate?
Devin: Well right now we are in the process of paying off some debts and looking for a new van and trailer after we unfortunately rolled ours in Wyoming on the last tour. After that we plan on touring, then touring, and then touring some more. We just have to get our name out there and put in the time it takes to be a successful band.  [ END ]
