Alt-Country artist Diane Louvel is back on the scene with her newest release, “Above and Beyond” – the title track from her upcoming album. This new track from Louvel explores societal expectations and work-life balance themes through melancholic folk instrumentals and raw, down-to-earth vocals.

The lyrics behind “Above and Beyond” signify that we can easily lose ourselves in striving to please others. The title of this track is an overused expression in the corporate world, which fosters a clever irony between the meaning of the lyrics and the unravelling of their meaning. This juxtaposition can also be seen in the humorous aspect of Louvel’s words and the sincerity in her voice.

She comments:

“This song was originally written as observational humor but it turned out to be kind of sincere. I wanted to include the idea of ‘being seen’ and the power of friendship as a vital antidote to an otherwise cynical view of hustle culture.”

The song pokes fun at the idea that you only get ahead by going “above and beyond” what’s technically required. Once this precedent is set, that overachiever mentality becomes the true expectation. There’s no such thing as meeting the standard anymore because we are seen as lesser than if we don’t push ourselves to overperform. In the corporate world, this idea isn’t anything new, but Louvel strives to acknowledge the personal sacrifice required to survive in that environment.
