Album Review
Raised As Wolves – “An Ocean On Fire” [EP]
The sedated, ethereal intro “25/9/11” gives the listener no indication of what is to follow on the rest of this relatively short EP. I was definitely caught off guard when “Conversations” slapped me out of my trance with its down-tuned staccato rhythm. I think what Raised As Wolves have done here is quite interesting and seems to me as though they took the percussive nature of nu-metal, mixed it up with post-hardcore vocals and a pinch of alternative rock, creating something all their own.

When writing this review, I went back and listened to An Ocean On Fire a few times (it’s easy to do with a total run time of only 17:42), each time discovering different nuances I hadn’t previously heard. Sort of like peeling back an onion to reveal its layers; and yes, there are many layers to this EP. All in all I really dig this disc as it contains just the right amount of heaviness, is unpredictable, and most of all, is a highly enjoyable listen.
